James Archer

“Marketing involves everything ever.”

James Archer is Forty’s founder and Managing Director. Leading Forty to become the world’s most remarkable and respected marketing agency is his life’s work. His vision, determination, and boldness have put us on a steady course toward accomplishing that goal.

James is driven by the belief that marketing done right is a powerful force for good in the world, and success should be measured by more than just revenue. He didn’t just imitate the structure and processes of other agencies. Instead, he rigorously studied the most innovative companies in the world (along with their sometimes counterintuitive strategies) and applied those insights at Forty to create a surprisingly sustainable, democratic work environment that consistently produces high-quality, respected work.

As an author, James has written widely about marketing and business issues, trying to dispel many of the myths and misconceptions held by businesses and agencies alike. He’s currently writing a book about the unique problems faced by businesses in the $1-10M/year range (a small, but powerful economic niche) and how successful companies have overcome them.

As a speaker, James is all too happy to give away Forty’s secret sauce, sharing strategic insights at conferences, workshops, seminars, and other events. He also serves as a volunteer mentor, donating time to startups and small businesses trying to figure out their next steps.

James has served on boards for the AIGA (graphic design association), Commpose (copywriting association), Gangplank (collaborative workspace), and Phoenix Design Week (conference and festival). He also has volunteered for countless events over the years, reflecting his dedication and commitment to improving the industry.

“Quite plainly, James is a presence that inevitably brings out higher standards. I am certain that he has a personal time machine that allows him to accomplish as much as he does. Mr. Archer is a solid man that I hold in the highest respects.” (Jeremie Lederman)

“James is the guy you want as your company’s fearless leader. He has a firm grasp on business, marketing, design, communities, and, well, everything that matters. He stands out in the industry as someone who just ‘gets it’ without having to say it.” (Brian Shaler)

“James can easily switch from business mode, to design, to client, to friend, back to business all with ease. His professional attitude and work ethic are amazing to work with” (Aaron Post)

“James is a very talented designer with a great head for business, branding and marketing. He’s a tireless worker with a head full of great ideas” (D. Keith Robinson)
